Secret Santa Name Draw (Online Hat)
A classic name draw breaks when someone pulls their own name or the group can’t meet in person. DrawSage’s online name draw guarantees nobody gets themselves, respects your exclusions, and keeps every match private.
How it works
- Start a draw and give it a name.
- Everyone joins with their name from one link.
- Run the name draw once everyone is in.
- Each person opens their private link to see who they drew.
Why online beats a hat
Pulling names from a hat is charming, but it has real problems. Someone always draws themselves, and the whole group has to redraw. Couples pull each other. Half the family isn't in the room. And when someone forgets who they drew, there's no record. An online name draw fixes all of that: it never assigns anyone to themselves, it respects couples and other exclusions, people join from wherever they are, and each person can reopen their private link whenever they need to.
You still get the fun reveal moment. Many groups open their links together on a call, or at the start of a party, and react at the same time.
Step-by-step: a name draw in under five minutes
Create a draw and give it a recognizable title like "Martinez Family 2026". Set a budget and add the exchange date in the notes. Copy the join link and paste it into your group chat. As people join, their names appear on your organizer page. If anyone can't join themselves (a grandparent, a young child), add them using their name from your own phone and keep their private link for them.
Once everyone's in, add any exclusions, then press Run. Everyone opens their own link to see their match. Remind people to add a wishlist; it makes the gift better and gives the AI more to work with.
Fairness, explained simply
In mathematical terms, a Secret Santa draw is a "derangement": a shuffle where nobody stays in their original spot. DrawSage generates random derangements and rejects any that break your exclusions, repeating until it finds a valid one. That means every person gives exactly one gift and receives exactly one gift. There are no orphans and no double-ups.
A fair draw, explained in plain words
A fair Secret Santa draw has three properties. Everyone gives exactly one gift, everyone receives exactly one gift, and nobody is assigned to themselves. Mathematicians call that a derangement. DrawSage builds one at random and, if you added exclusions, keeps trying fresh random arrangements until it finds one that respects them all. Because every valid arrangement is equally likely, nobody can game the order of sign-ups to influence who they get.
If your exclusions make a valid draw impossible, for example three people who are each excluded from everyone else, DrawSage tells you before the draw runs instead of silently ignoring a rule. Remove one exclusion and try again.
Name draw checklist
- Agree the budget and the exchange date before you send the link.
- Add every participant, including yourself if you want to play.
- Add exclusions for partners, roommates or last year's pairs.
- Run the draw only once everyone has joined, because adding people later means re-drawing.
- Remind people to add a wishlist; it is the single biggest improvement to gift quality.
What participants see after the draw
Each participant's private page shows the name of the person they're buying for, the agreed budget and exchange date, that person's wishlist, and a panel of AI gift ideas tailored to the wishlist and budget. Participants can also edit their own wishlist at any time, and their Santa sees updates immediately. Nobody else, including the organizer, can see the pairing, so the surprise holds until exchange day.
FAQ
Can someone draw their own name?
No. The draw always assigns everyone a different person.
What if we can’t meet in person?
That’s the point — everyone joins and reveals online from any device.
Can we redo the draw?
Draws are final to keep them fair; create a new draw if your group changes a lot.
Is it random?
Yes. Assignments are randomly generated and respect any exclusions you add.
What if someone forgets who they drew?
They just reopen their private link. Tell everyone to bookmark it.
Can the organizer participate too?
Yes. Join your own draw with your name like everyone else; the organizer page never shows matches.
Can I add people who don't have a phone?
Yes. Join on their behalf and keep their private link for them.
Can we do the reveal together?
Yes. Agree on a time and have everyone open their links at once.
Can I re-run the draw?
Yes, as long as the exchange hasn't happened. Re-running creates brand-new pairings, so let everyone know to check their private link again.
Does the order people join affect who they get?
No. The assignment is random over all valid arrangements, so joining first or last makes no difference.
